robyn.wainwright@worldcement.comThis year is a year of milestones. Here at
World Cement
,
we mark our 90
th
anniversary in 2018: a long and
strong history that underpins our status as the leading
publication covering the global cement industry. This
year also marks the 60
th
IEEE-IAS/PCA Cement Industry
Conference, which takes place in Nashville this month,
and the 10
th
anniversary of
World Cement’s
IEEE-IAS/PCA Cement Industry Conference Supplement
.
Started in the boom years back in 2008, the supplement
has provided unparalleled coverage of the conference
in the decade since – navigating (as the conference has itself successfully done)
some challenging times in between!
The eagle-eyed among you, however, will have noticed a change to our front
cover this year. To celebrate the supplement’s continued success and to reflect a US
construction industry that is growing in strength, we are excited to relaunch the
supplement as
World Cement North America
. As part of this, we have broadened
its scope to include wider coverage of the construction and cement markets of
North America, as well as technical case studies and articles.
If you are reading this in Nashville, don’t worry! The traditional in-depth
coverage of the IEEE-IAS/PCA Cement Industry Conference is still here. Starting on
p. 35, this includes a review of the last decade of the conference by Ted Richardson,
IEEE-IAS Cement Industry Committee (CIC) Chair, and an introduction to this year’s
show from Mike Sebasto, IEEE-IAS CIC Vice Chair.
This year’s plant tour – which unusually is taking conference attendees outside
of the cement industry to Nissan’s Smyrna plant – is also profiled, as well as next
year’s (more traditional) tour of LafargeHolcim’s Ste. Genevieve plant. Next year’s
conference will take place on 28 April – 2 May in St Louis, Missouri. Put that date
in your diaries.
Beyond the conference coverage, we include reports on the US construction
industry from Ken Simonsen, Chief Economist of the Associated General
Contractors of America, as well as the Canadian construction industry from
BMI Research. Raluca Cercel of CW Group also provides her predictions for the
future of US cement demand.
On the technical side, perhaps the highlight is an article from the team behind
the demonstration of the first integrated carbon capture and utilisation project
within the cement industry. Led by CarbonCure Technologies, the team captured
CO
2
from the cement plant kiln at Argos USA’s Roberta cement in Alabama. The
captured CO
2
was then transported for use at Argos USA’s Glenwood concrete
operations in Altanta, Georgia.
We begin, however, with a Guest Comment from Allen Hamblen, President and
CEO of CalPortland and current Chairman of the Portland Cement Association, who
raises the pressing question of resiliency in construction – and how that interplays
with discussions about green construction. It is a fascinating read and a good
starting point for talking about a topic that is only going to grow in importance,
given the increasing trend towards more extreme weather events.
These are just some of the highlights of this inaugural issue of
World Cement
North America
. I hope you enjoy the issue – and, as always, I would be pleased to
receive your feedback. I can be reached at
