US$20 000. A trained crew is sent out with

confined space entry equipment and an

inspector is lowered into and alongside the

silo, typically from the roof.

Level three

At this top tier the same exterior and interior

inspections occur, but with additional expertise

on the ground. This is achieved by including

a silo design engineer onsite for analysis and

written recommendations. The range in cost is

widest at this level, at between US$12 000 and

US$30 000, depending on the number of silos

needing inspection and the scope of needs that

require attention.

Through clear communication with the

specialised inspector on a consistent

schedule, both cost and severity factors can

be taken into account when planning the next

appointment. In all three inspection options,

recommendations for repairs and remediation

are provided if warranted. But the key to

having credible recommendations is to have a

specialised inspector or silo design engineer

involved in the project.

Typically, an inspection looks at the

foundations for deterioration or settlements.

In addition, inspectors look at the silo walls

to make sure they are structurally sound

and can withstand the pressures placed on

them for both vertical and horizontal loads

(horizontal loads are an often underestimated

component). Looking at the silo roof structure

is also important because this can become a

problematic issue. An inspection ensures that

it is operating correctly and that there is no

potential for collapse into the silo.

After this, another investigation focuses on

what is holding the stored material from the

bottom. Whether it be a flat-bottom silo or a

cone-bottom silo, whatever structure is in the

bottom of the silo is also subject to a large

vertical gravity load. This structure is affected

by material side pressures pushing out on the

structure and how it ties into the wall.

Budget

But how does a facility manager or silo owner

protect the company pocketbook and still

responsibly maintain the silo? With regular

planning and by scheduling routine inspections

on rotation, an owner can minimise the need

for remediation while also keeping expert eyes

on preventative maintenance needs.
