John Kline, Kline Consulting,
discusses ways cement plants
can adapt to a changing
landscape of CO
2
regulations.
Introduction
The most pressing issue for the cement plant of the
future may be portland cement’s large CO
2
footprint.
Portland cement has a large carbon footprint due to
both the combustion of fuel and to the CO
2
released
from limestone in the calcination reaction. Limestone
needs to be activated by releasing its combined CO
2
in
order to react with silica and form the calcium silicates
that gives portland cement its unique properties.
