Introduction
Japanese car maker, Nissan, began manufacturing in the
US in 1983. It cemented its place in the fabric of the US
automotive industry when a white Nissan pick-up truck
rolled itself off the assembly line and into the lives of
its consumers. Over three decades later, Nissan owns
four US manufacturing facilities, producing 1.14 million
vehicles a year.
One of these plants is the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle
Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. The concept
of this plant was a groundbreaking moment for the
local community, as it introduced the first wave of
automotive production jobs to the state. Since then,
the plant has developed into a manufacturing force,
producing around two cars per minute and six models
in parallel. It has also developed a lasting relationship
