jobs, leading to millions of dollars in annual economic

activity. The facility has 244 employees and produces

Type I-II Low Alkali and Type IL (10% limestone

addition) cement for markets throughout the

Mississippi River basin. In addition to benefiting from

low-cost, energy-efficient barge transportation, the

facility is also well-positioned to take advantage of rail

and truck transportation.

Since startup, the plant has achieved several notable

milestones, including the production of a record

4.1 million t of cement in 2017. It has also earned the

US Environmental Protection Agency’s prestigious

ENERGY STAR

®

designation for superior energy

performance, operating well below emissions

limits. With the addition of the new state-of-the-

art clinker cooler system, it has achieved a cost-

leadership position within the company’s worldwide

manufacturing network.

Plant overview

Certified to ISO 9000 and 14 000 standards, the

Ste. Genevieve complex is one of the industry’s most

technologically advanced cement manufacturing plants.

Plant operations include the largest single-kiln line

in the Americas, sophisticated emission controls, fully

automated quality-control laboratories, a harbour and

fleeting facility, and some of the largest silos ever built.

Raw mill

The plant uses two vertical roller mills (VRMs) to

grind and dry all the raw materials, which reduces

energy consumption by more than 30% compared

to ball-milling processes. Each mill is equipped

with 3900 kW gear reducers and is capable of

grinding approximately 515 tph of raw material to a

product fineness of 15% retained on a 90

μ

m sieve.

Raw-material mix is fed to separate bins and discharged

to each mill by a weighfeeder. Each mill is arranged in a

three-fan system that passes the required gas through

the mill circuit and main filter. With the mill and

control arrangement, the plant can and has achieved a

kiln-feed uniformity of 1.0.

The Ste. Genevieve cement plant is the largest cement-producing facility in North America and among the most

environmentally efficient and safest.

The plant’s kiln has a production capacity of

approximately 12 000 tpd of clinker, making it the

largest single-kiln line in the Americas.

The plant’s fully-robotic laboratory ensures the

production of high-quality cement products for

construction projects throughout US Midwest.
