Colombia

Cartagena and Rioclaro Plant, Argos

Argos established an alternative fuel supply

line of coprocessing in the facilities of Argos’

Cartagena and Rioclaro plants.

The company was able to manage and

consume all types of alternative fuels with

a good result. In 2019 in Colombia, Argos

was able to co-process 8000 t of waste,

including tyres, with an increase of 75% of

the substitution of fossil fuels, in comparison

with 2018. Those results are in line with

Argos’ Environmental Strategy and the circular

economy.

An investment of more than US$78 million

was made at the Rioclaro Plant for the

assembly of the new production line capable

of producing 450 000 tpy of calcined clay.

With this investment, Argos has begun to

manufacture and distribute Green Cement.

In this process, the use of traditional clinker

(base material for cement) is reduced thanks

to the incorporation of calcined clays (artificial

pozzolan).

This innovative product makes it a more

environmentally friendly cement, since during

the production process carbon dioxide

emissions are reduced up to 38% and

energy consumption is reduced by 30%, in

comparison to the industry standard.

Bricking Solutions also supplied a Universal

Safety Cage to the plant, for kilns ranging

from 4 m to 6 m.

Sonsón, Empresa Colombiana de Cementos

(Ecocementos)

Empresa Colombiana de Cementos

(Ecocementos), a company held by

Cementos Molins and Corona, has confirmed

the start of production in its new cement

plant in the municipality of Sonsón, Antioquia,

Colombia. The installation has represented an

investment of more than a billion Colombian

pesos (approximately US$380 million), and

it will reach a production capacity of up to

1 500 000 tpy of cement.

Chile

Punta Arenas, Melon SA

Melon SA awarded Bedeschi with a contract

for the supply of a new Eco-Hopper to be

operated on the austral port of Punta Arenas,

Chile.

The Eco-Hopper is designed for direct

unloading of clinker to trucks at a rate of

600 tph and is designed to work with 12 m

3

grabs. The machine is equipped with pulse-jet

bag filters with high filtration capacity and

performance and with low compressed air

consumption: an economical and flexible

solution to satisfy the stringent environmental

standards required.

The Eco-Hopper is designed with a special

support structure that allows a solid anchoring

of the hopper to the pier structures during

unloading operations, but at the same time it

allows the machine to be moved by means of

SPMT when not in use. This configuration is

made necessary by the multi-purpose nature

of the Punta Arenas port and due to structural

limitations of the existing pier. These operational

constraints have forced Bedeschi engineers

to find a solution in terms of flexibility of use,

weight limitation and structural strength.

The Eco-Hopper will be delivered complete

with electrical plant and control system and will

be finally assembled directly on Punta Arenas.

Also at Punta Arenas, Cemengal has been

commissioned to supply one Plug&Grind

XTREME unit with a production capacity of

350 000 tpy: ball mill Ø 3.2 x 11.5 m and

1600 kW to the Punta Arenas plant, as well as

a XP4i separator for production of high Blaine

cements for special cement applications. The

scope of supply includes equipment for raw

material transport from the client’s storage

halls, cement handling equipment for transfer

and steel storage silos, as well as dispatching

facilities for bagging and palletising.

Fives has also supplied one PILLARD

HEATGEN Hot gases generator for a cement

grinding mill.

Ecuador

Chimborazo, UCEM

FCT Combustion supplied UCEM’s

Chimborazo plant with a complete clay drying

system. The supply included an innovative

hot gas generator for solid fuels, featuring a

fluidised bed which eliminates the need for

grinding. The supply also included a triple

shell rotary dryer, bag filter and fans.

Otavalo, Unacem

Cemengal has been commissioned to

supply one Plug&Grind XTREME unit with a

production capacity of 350 000 tpy: ball mill

Ø 3.2 x 11.5 m and 1600 kW to the Otavalo

plant, as well as an XP4i separator for
