JÜRGEN SKOWAISA, VEGA, GERMANY, DISCUSSES RADAR MEASURING TECHNOLOGY
AND ITS APPLICATION IN THE CEMENT INDUSTRY.
I
n comparison with other technologies,
radar measuring technology is the ideal
solution for measuring the level in all
applications in the cement industry. It
is non-contact and unimpressed by large
deposits of dust and dirt. Nevertheless,
even this technology often reached its
limits. The radar level measuring instrument
Vegapuls 69 is recommended for many
applications in this industry thanks to its
focusing ability.
The cement industry makes special
demands on level measurement. Sensors with
different measuring ranges are required, for
example, for all the measuring jobs in the
production of cement. Raw meal, clinker
and finished cement are stored in silos of
different heights. Until now, although the
use of a radar level measuring instrument
was possible, it sometimes demanded all the
skills of the technicians. This was because too
many interference signals made it difficult to
detect the useful signals.
The external conditions in quarries
are already problematic for measuring
instruments. Not only do dirt, dust and the
occasional rock fall cause problems for the
measuring instruments, the often confined
installation conditions, for example, in
breakers or sometimes very wide measuring
ranges in bunkers and open dumps, bring the
sensors to the limits of their performance.
Nevertheless, the use of level measuring
instruments is imperative: in order to ensure
cost-effective operation and to keep wear
on the crasher to a minimum, the filling of
the crasher must be monitored. A continuous
filling height measurement or a pure point
level detection is required depending on the
space conditions and the crasher feeding.
